Backseat Bitch
A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of making a rare appearance in Queens for the highly anticipated debut of Backseat Bitch at Arena Queens. The 5 piece band of Matthew Pritchard, Isam Rum, Jonathan Clark, Lisa Wilson & Joey Santiago are veterans of the NYC music scene. So even only knowing one song in advance, I knew this set would not disappoint.
I recall over the years how Matthew was described as being one of the best vocalists in our area. It had been years since I last saw him perform but I quickly see why that is the case. I've been to so many shows over the last decade & I can only recall one other vocalist who made it seem like they did not even have to try as their tone was all natural. For someone like me, vocals are extremely important as it is the number one thing I pay close attention to detail on other than guitar work.
The 11 song set was highly enjoyable from the outset with a strong opener in That's What I Came Here For as it got the crowd's energy going while pacing it for the rest of the show. The one song I did know, Don't Come Undone was played third. I absolutely love Matthew's vocals on the album track & was happy to hear it sound just as great live.
Some other highlights included Absentee, Mishegoss & a song I really got into in Leave It All Behind. However it is very easy to say that my new favorite by far is Superfriends. For starters, I felt this was placed very nicely on the setlist as it's melodic beginning serves as a perfect change of pace song. What sets this song off for me is how as it is being built for a powerful ending. I love every aspect of this song as it just flows together perfectly. I could never get tired of hearing it & hope it is a staple at all their shows from here on out.
The crowd was highly appreciative of their entire set as they were treated to quality from start to finish. Sadly that is a rare thing in music as it seems to be more about glitz & glam versus well crafted songs & actual musical talent. If you long for such music, Backseat Bitch will not disappoint! Whenever they are around, I will do my best to be there & the same should go for each & everyone of you!
