The Ruby Spirit
CD: Born Under A Veil (2010, Eye Scream Publishing)
by Carolyn Delvalle
The Ruby Spirit hailing from the east end of Toronto describe themselves as a kaleidoscopic rock band with pop confections. So with that in mind, I was interested to see what this 5 piece (Paige Boy, Alex Pulec, Mickey Donnell, Jay Cipparone & Juliana Eye) sounded like. The results definitely impressed me.
Born Under a Veil is a 6 song EP starting off with the song Tin Can Bees. It is always a good feeling when the first track gets me going. Tin Can Bees reminded me of a feeling I have known others to have since I myself have had it.. “No one knows what I am going through, we hate where we live but love the view.” My interpretation of it is the feeling one gets when you need a change of scenery, or having a love / hate relationship with where you live. Paige's vocals have a rough edge to them while maintaining a sweet sound to your ears. The last track on the EP Caligari reminded me of something that might be featured in a Broadway musical. Her vocals in the song perfectly fit the vibe that the song gave off.
My favorite two tracks on the EP are Tin Can Bees & Fix/Repair which contained the haunting line of "Who do you do you love when their's nobody there to fix and repair?" which could be taken in so many ways. I like many others am drawn to songs that remind me of situations in my own life. That is why music is great because everyone has their own interpretation of what it means which helps us all in our own way. Overall I think Born Under A Veil is an awesome album which makes me look very forward to future releases from The Ruby Spirit.
