Said The Whale

CD: New Brighton (2011, Hidden Pony Records)

by Carolyn Delvalle

Said The Whale formed back in 2007 in Vancouver, BC. They have been busy ever since as they have put out 3 EP's & 2 full length albums. Their latest release is the 4 track EP New Brighton which has them usually touring through the U.S.

I first discovered them at CMJ this year as they were one of the acts for the Skewer 2011 CMJ Showcase (click here for a review of the showcase). Their new EP while short can definitely be labeled sweet as this indie folk pop band delivers with their harmonious melodies and bubbly tunes.

My favorite song from the EP is the self-titled track which happens to kick off the festivities. It gives you a good idea of what their sound is all about which would make a perfect soundtrack for a long road trip. My second favorite would have the be the finale, Little Bird which references a little bird flying into a window which changes their life. I interpreted it as a friend who comes in to your life, teaches you a lesson and changes your life for the better since you were in a dark place prior.

This EP definitely leaves you wanting more but thankfully they have a few more albums and EP's to go around. Their new album "Little Mountain" will be out on March 6, 2012.
