Awolnation: Megalithic Symphony

CD: Megalithic Symphony (2011, Red Bull Records)

by Angie Ho

Following in the tracks of Deadmau5′s mouse head, AWOLNATION wears it’s astronaut helmet proudly. From cover to cover of the CD packaging, the album also looks out of this world. And it sounds like it, too.

The most amazing thing about this album is its props to music as a whole. There’s something for everyone in Megalithic Symphony – a dash of hip and hop, a punch of dance, a kick of punk, and a burst of pop.

Aaron Bruno (the mind and magic behind AWOLNATION, also of Under the Influence of Giants [2000-2008 hiatus]), tributes the synth/keyboard over the guitar, which may surprise or scare away some listeners, but after running through the album, they’ll forget all about it. Each instrument (many played by Aaron himself) and vocals (whether it be swooning/crooning or rapping) adds to the festivity in a refreshing way. If there’s anything that needs a little work (and I really do mean little), it’s the lyrics – some of the tracks have repetitive words, but at the very least, it adds appeal to pop and top 40 followers.

Every time you listen to it, it gets better. How many albums can you say does this?

Overall, AWOLNATION brings an exciting assortment to the stage of music – creating a truly diverse monster of an album, bringing listeners far beyond what they’re used to, and satisfying the album name, Megalithic Symphony
